Expresses purpose. With nouns it means 'for the sake of'. Distinguished from 〜ように which expresses a goal state.
उद्देश्य व्यक्त गर्छ। संज्ञासँग यसको अर्थ '~ को निम्ति' हुन्छ। लक्ष्य अवस्था व्यक्त गर्ने 〜ように भन्दा यो फरक हुन्छ।
〜ようになるVerb FormsTo come to be able to ~ / to reach the point where ~~ गर्न सक्षम हुन थाल्नु / ~ भएको स्थितिमा पुग्नुVerb dictionary form + ようになる
Expresses a change of state or newly acquired ability over time. Often used with できる for ability.
समयसँगै अवस्थाको परिवर्तन वा नयाँ क्षमता प्राप्ति व्यक्त गर्छ। क्षमताका लागि प्रायः できる सँग प्रयोग हुन्छ।
〜てしまうVerb FormsTo end up doing ~ (regret or completion)अन्त्यमा ~ गरिसक्नु (पछुतो वा पूर्णता)Verb て-form + しまう
Two uses: (1) completed an action (often with some regret), (2) did something unintentionally. Colloquial: 〜ちゃう.

〜てあげる / もらう / くれるVerb FormsGiving/receiving verbs of favorसहयोग दिने/प्राप्त गर्ने क्रियाहरूVerb て-form + あげる / もらう / くれる
あげる: I give favor to others. もらう: I receive favor. くれる: others give favor to me. Direction is crucial.
あげる: म अरूलाई सहयोग गर्छु। もらう: म सहयोग प्राप्त गर्छु। くれる: अरूले मलाई सहयोग गर्छन्। दिशा महत्त्वपूर्ण हुन्छ।
〜ば〜ほどExpressionThe more ~ the more ~जति ~ त्यति ~Verb/Adj ば-form + 〜ほど
Expresses a proportional relationship. Both clauses must express the same type of progression.
समानुपातिक सम्बन्ध व्यक्त गर्छ। दुवै उपवाक्यले उही प्रकारको वृद्धि व्यक्त गर्नुपर्छ।
〜のにExpressionEven though ~ / Despite ~ (contrast)~ भए तापनि / ~ भए पनि (विपरीत)Plain form + のに
Expresses contrast where the result is unexpected or disappointing. Carries emotional nuance (surprise, frustration).

〜らしいExpressionIt seems that ~ / I heard that ~~ जस्तो देखिन्छ / ~ भन्ने सुनियोPlain form + らしい
Based on hearsay or indirect evidence. Compare: 〜ようだ (looks like, based on what you see) vs らしい (heard from someone/somewhere).
सुनेको कुरा वा अप्रत्यक्ष प्रमाणमा आधारित। तुलना: 〜ようだ (आफूले देखेका आधारमा) बनाम らしい (कसैबाट/कतैबाट सुनिएको)।

させる = make/let someone do. させられる = be made to do (causative passive, often implies unwillingness).

Expresses an ongoing action, a habitual action, or a state resulting from a change. One of the most essential verb forms.

Describes a state resulting from someone's intentional action. Focuses on the result rather than the action itself.

Used when doing something in advance for future benefit, or leaving something as is. In casual speech, 〜とく is common.

Used when the speaker hears new information and responds based on it. Often used for suggestions or advice about a given situation.

Used to report information heard from another source. Does not conjugate. The speaker is not expressing their own opinion but reporting what they've heard.
अर्को स्रोतबाट सुनेको जानकारी रिपोर्ट गर्न प्रयोग हुन्छ। यसको रूप परिवर्तन हुँदैन। वक्ताले आफ्नो राय होइन, सुनेको कुरा मात्र भन्छन्।

Expresses a judgement based on visual appearance. Different from hearsay そう. The speaker infers from what they see.

〜ようです / 〜みたいですVerb FormsIt seems / looks like — conjecturalजस्तो लाग्छ / देखिन्छ — अनुमानात्मकVerb (plain) + ようです / い-adjective + ようです / な-adjective + な + ようです / Noun + の + ようです. みたい is the casual version.
Expresses a conjecture based on some evidence or observation. よう is more formal; みたい is more conversational.
केही प्रमाण वा अवलोकनको आधारमा गरिने अनुमान जनाउँछ। よう अझ औपचारिक हो; みたい अझ बोलचालको हो।
〜まで / 〜までにTime & SequenceUntil / by — temporal limitsसम्म / सम्ममा — समयको सीमाまで: continuing action up to a point / までに: deadline or limit for an action
まで marks the end point of a continuous action. までに marks a deadline by which an action must be completed.
まで ले निरन्तर क्रियाको अन्तिम बिन्दु जनाउँछ। までに ले क्रिया पूरा गर्नुपर्ने म्याद जनाउँछ।
〜はずJudgment & ModalitySupposed to / should be — expectation based on reasonहुनुपर्ने / हुनै पर्ने — तर्कको आधारमा अपेक्षाVerb (plain) + はず / い-adjective + はず / な-adjective + な + はず / Noun + の + はず
Expresses an expectation based on logical reasoning or known facts. The speaker believes something is likely true or supposed to happen.
तार्किक कारण वा ज्ञात तथ्यहरूको आधारमा गरिने अपेक्षा जनाउँछ। वक्ताले कुनै कुरा सत्य हुन सक्छ वा हुनुपर्छ भन्ने विश्वास गर्छन्।
〜つもりDesire & IntentIntend to / plan to — intentionगर्ने इरादा / योजना — आशयVerb (plain present) + つもり / Verb ない-form + つもり
Expresses a firm intention or plan. Negative form 〜ないつもり or つもりはない both mean 'don't intend to'.
दृढ इरादा वा योजना जनाउँछ। नकारात्मक रूप 〜ないつもり वा つもりはない दुवैको अर्थ 'गर्ने इरादा छैन' हुन्छ।
〜ことにする / 〜ことになるVerb FormsDecide to / it is decided that — personal vs impersonal decisionगर्ने निर्णय गर्नु / निर्णय भएको — आफ्नो बनाम अरूले गरेको निर्णयVerb (plain) + ことにする (personal decision) / Verb (plain) + ことになる (impersonal decision)
ことにする indicates a personal decision. ことになる indicates an external decision or arrangement made by others.
ことにする ले व्यक्तिगत निर्णय जनाउँछ। ことになる ले अरूले गरेको बाह्य निर्णय वा व्यवस्था जनाउँछ।
〜ように (purpose / change)Verb FormsIn order to (achieve a state) / become able to — purpose or change(कुनै अवस्था प्राप्त गर्न) को लागि / सक्षम हुनु — उद्देश्य वा परिवर्तनVerb (plain present/negative) + ように / Verb potential form + ようになる
Expresses a purpose that involves a desired state or change. Also used with potential verbs to indicate becoming able to do something (ようになる).
इच्छित अवस्था वा परिवर्तनसँग सम्बन्धित उद्देश्य जनाउँछ। क्षमता क्रियाहरूसँग पनि कुनै कुरा गर्न सक्षम हुनु (ようになる) जनाउन प्रयोग हुन्छ।
〜んです / 〜のSentence EndersExplanatory — giving a reason, explanation, or asking for oneकारण वा व्याख्या दिने / सोध्ने अर्थ जनाउनेSentence (plain form) + んです / ん / の
Adds an explanatory or emphatic nuance to a statement or question. んです is the polite form, んです can sound casual in speech, and の is used in casual questions and by women in particular.
कथन वा प्रश्नमा व्याख्यात्मक वा जोडदार अर्थ थप्छ। んです विनम्र रूप हो र の अनौपचारिक प्रश्न तथा विशेष गरी महिलाहरूले प्रयोग गर्छन्।
〜ようにするDesire & IntentTo make a habit / effort of doing somethingकुनै काम गर्ने बानी वा प्रयास बसाउने अर्थVerb (plain non-past) + ようにする
Expresses a conscious effort to do or stop doing something. Often used with ようにしている to describe a personal habit or rule one follows.
कुनै काम गर्ने वा नगर्ने सचेत प्रयास जनाउँछ। आफ्नो बानी वा नियम बताउन ようにしている रूपमा प्रायः प्रयोग हुन्छ।
〜ていただけませんかRequest & PermissionCould you please do ~? (very polite request)के तपाईं ~ गर्न सक्नुहुन्छ? (धेरै विनम्र अनुरोध)Verb て-form + いただけませんか
A humble, very polite way to make a request. いただく is the humble form of もらう, so this literally asks to receive the favor. Softer and more respectful than 〜てください.
अनुरोध गर्ने धेरै विनम्र तरिका। いただく भनेको もらう को नम्र रूप हो, त्यसैले शाब्दिक अर्थ उपकार प्राप्त गर्न सोध्नु हो। 〜てください भन्दा कोमल र सम्मानजनक।
可能形 (Potential Form)Verb FormsPotential form — expressing ability or possibilityक्षमता वा सम्भावना जनाउने क्रिया रूपGroup 1 verbs: final う → える (話す → 話せる) / Group 2 verbs: る → られる (食べる → 食べられる)
The potential form means 'can do'. Group 2 verbs add られる (often shortened to れる), Group 1 verbs change the final う-row sound to える-row, and する becomes できる, 来る becomes 来られる.
क्रिया रूपले 'गर्न सक्नु' भन्ने अर्थ दिन्छ। समूह २ मा られる (प्रायः れる छोट्याइन्छ) थपिन्छ, समूह १ मा अन्तिम う-पङ्क्ति ध्वनि える-पङ्क्तिमा परिवर्तन हुन्छ, する → できる र 来る → 来られる हुन्छ।

Expresses a suggestion (let's do), intention (I will do), or invitation. Group 2 verbs add よう, Group 1 verbs change the final う-row sound to おう-row, する becomes しよう, and 来る becomes 来よう.
सुझाव (हामी ~ गरौँ), इच्छा (म ~ गर्छु) वा निमन्त्रणा जनाउँछ। समूह २ मा よう थपिन्छ, समूह १ मा अन्तिम う-पङ्क्ति ध्वनि おう-पङ्क्तिमा परिवर्तन हुन्छ, する → しよう र 来る → 来よう हुन्छ।
受身形 (Passive Form)Verb FormsPassive form — the subject receives the actionक्रिया रूप — कर्ताले क्रियाको प्रभाव प्राप्त गर्ने अर्थGroup 1 verbs: final う → あれる (書く → 書かれる) / Group 2 verbs: る → られる (食べる → 食べられる)
Expresses that something is done to the subject. Can also describe an unfortunate or unwanted happening. する becomes される, and 来る becomes 来られる.
कर्तामा केही गरिन्छ भन्ने अर्थ जनाउँछ। दुःखदायी वा अनिष्ट घटना जनाउन पनि प्रयोग हुन्छ। する → される र 来る → 来られる हुन्छ।
尊敬語 (Respectful Form)Verb FormsRespectful language — honoring the listener or a third personसम्मानजनक भाषा — श्रोता वा तेस्रो व्यक्तिको सम्मान गर्नेお〜になる / お〜ください / special verbs (行く → いらっしゃる, 食べる → 召し上がる)
Raises the status of the person being spoken to or about. Uses the お〜になる pattern or special respect verbs like 召し上がる (eat), いらっしゃる (go/come/be), and おっしゃる (say).
कुरा गरिएको व्यक्तिको हैसियत उचाल्छ। お〜になる ढाँचा वा 召し上がる (खानु), いらっしゃる (जानु/आउनु/हुनु), おっしゃる (भन्नु) जस्ता विशेष सम्मान क्रियाहरू प्रयोग गर्छ।
謙譲語 (Humble Form)Verb FormsHumble language — lowering the speaker's own actionsनम्र भाषा — आफ्नै कार्यलाई तल्लो स्तरमा राख्नेお〜する / special verbs (行く → 参る, 食べる → いただく, 言う → 申す)
Humbles the speaker's own actions to show respect to the listener. Uses the お〜する pattern or special humble verbs like 参る (go/come), いただく (receive/eat), and 申す (say).
वक्ताको आफ्नै कार्यलाई तल्लो बनाएर श्रोतालाई सम्मान देखाउँछ। お〜する ढाँचा वा 参る (जानु/आउनु), いただく (प्राप्त गर्नु/खानु), 申す (भन्नु) जस्ता विशेष नम्र क्रियाहरू प्रयोग गर्छ।
〜(させ)ていただけませんかRequest & PermissionCould you please let me do ~? (humble request for permission)के तपाईं मलाई ~ गर्न दिनुहुन्छ? (अनुमति माग्ने विनम्र अनुरोध)Verb causative て-form + いただけませんか
A very polite way to ask permission for your own action. Combines the causative form with いただけませんか. Often used to ask for time off, permission to leave early, or to speak.
आफ्नै कार्यका लागि अनुमति माग्ने धेरै विनम्र तरिका। प्रेरणार्थक रूपलाई いただけませんか सँग जोड्छ। बिदा माग्न, चाँडै फर्किन वा बोल्न अनुमति माग्न प्रयोग हुन्छ।
意向形 + と思うDesire & IntentPlanning to do ~ / I think I will ~~ गर्ने योजना / म ~ गर्ने सोचेको छुVerb volitional form + と思う
Used to express the speaker's intention or plan. In the past form (と思っていた) it can show a change of mind or past intention.
वक्ताको योजना वा इच्छा व्यक्त गर्छ। विगत रूप (と思っていた) मा विचार परिवर्तन वा विगतको इरादा जनाउन सक्छ।
命令形Verb FormsImperative form — giving a strong commandआज्ञार्थक रूप — बलियो आदेश दिनेGroup 1: change final u-sound to e-sound (書け, 読め) / Group 2: replace る with ろ (食べろ) / する→しろ / 来る→こい
Used for direct, strong commands. Not polite — used among close friends, in emergencies, or by authority figures. Cannot be used with です/ます.
प्रत्यक्ष, बलियो आदेशमा प्रयोग हुन्छ। विनम्र होइन — नजिकका साथीहरूसँग, आपतकालीन अवस्थामा, वा अधिकारीहरूले प्रयोग गर्छन्।
禁止形Verb FormsProhibitive form — must not do ~निषेधात्मक रूप — ~ गर्न हुँदैनVerb dictionary form + な
Used to strongly forbid an action. Very direct and masculine. Used by authority figures, parents, or in formal rules. The polite form is 〜てはいけません.
कुनै काम कडाइका साथ निषेध गर्न प्रयोग हुन्छ। धेरै प्रत्यक्ष र पुरुषप्रधान। अधिकारी, अभिभावक, वा नियमहरूमा प्रयोग हुन्छ। विनम्र रूप 〜てはいけません हो।
〜ほうがいいRequest & PermissionYou'd better / it's better to — advice or recommendation~ गर्दा राम्रो / ~ नै बढी राम्रो — सल्लाह वा सिफारिसVerb た-form + ほうがいい (past: advice based on experience) / Verb dictionary form + ほうがいい (general advice)
Used to give advice or recommendations. Past tense たほうがいい suggests what has been tried and found to be good. Negative: 〜ないほうがいい (better not to).
सल्लाह वा सिफारिस दिन प्रयोग हुन्छ। विगत रूप たほうがいい ले अनुभवमा राम्रो भएको कुरा सुझाउँछ। नकारात्मक: 〜ないほうがいい (नगर्दा राम्रो)।
〜なければならないRequest & PermissionMust / have to — obligation~ गर्नैपर्छ / ~ गर्नुपर्छ — बाध्यताVerb ない-form (drop ない) + なければならない
Expresses strong obligation or necessity. Shorter forms: 〜なきゃ (casual), 〜ないと (casual), 〜なくては (formal). All mean 'must do'.
कडा बाध्यता वा आवश्यकता जनाउँछ। छोटो रूप: 〜なきゃ (अनौपचारिक), 〜ないと (अनौपचारिक), 〜なくては (औपचारिक)। सबैको अर्थ 'गर्नैपर्छ'।
〜かもしれないJudgment & ModalityMight / perhaps / maybe — possibility~ हुन सक्छ / सायद — सम्भावनाVerb/Adjective (plain form) + かもしれない / Noun + かもしれない
Expresses possibility or uncertainty. Lower probability than 〜でしょう. Casual form: 〜かも.
सम्भावना वा अनिश्चितता जनाउँछ। 〜でしょう भन्दा कम सम्भावना। अनौपचारिक रूप: 〜かも।
〜と思うJudgment & ModalityI think that ~ / to think — expressing opinion or thought~ सोच्छु / ~ विचार — राय वा विचार व्यक्त गर्नेSentence (plain form) + と思う
Used to express one's opinion, thought, or guess. For others' thoughts, use 〜と思っている. Question form 〜と思いますか asks for opinion.
आफ्नो राय, विचार वा अनुमान व्यक्त गर्न प्रयोग हुन्छ। अरूको विचारको लागि 〜と思っている प्रयोग गर्नुहोस्। प्रश्न रूप 〜と思いますか ले राय सोध्छ।
〜て / 〜で (原因)Reason & ResultBecause of ~ / due to ~ — cause or reason (te-form)~ भएर / ~ को कारण — कारण वा कारण (て-रूप)Verb て-form / い-adjective くて / な-adjective + で / Noun + で
The te-form can express cause or reason in addition to sequence. The result is usually something unexpected or unfortunate. Different from から/ので which are more deliberate.
て-रूपले क्रमको साथै कारण पनि जनाउँछ। परिणाम प्रायः अप्रत्याशित वा दुःखलाग्दो हुन्छ। から/ので भन्दा फरक जसलाई जानाजानी कारण बताउँछ।
〜し〜しReason & ResultAnd / and what's more — listing multiple reasons or facts~ पनि ~ पनि / ~ र ~ त — बहु कारण वा तथ्य सूचीबद्ध गर्नेVerb/Adjective (plain form) + し + Verb/Adjective (plain form) + し
Used to list multiple reasons or facts. The last し often has も. When giving reasons, the speaker implies there are other reasons too. Can also list characteristics.
बहुविध कारण वा तथ्य सूचीबद्ध गर्न प्रयोग हुन्छ। अन्तिम し मा प्रायः आउँछ। कारण दिँदा अरू कारण पनि छन् भन्ने जनाउँछ। विशेषताहरू पनि सूचीबद्ध गर्न सकिन्छ।
それでReason & ResultTherefore / that's why / so — expressing consequenceत्यसैले / त्यसकारण — परिणाम व्यक्त गर्नेSentence + それで + Sentence
Connects two sentences where the second is a natural consequence of the first. More conversational than そのため. Can also start a sentence to ask 'so?' or 'and then?'

More formal than 〜たら or 〜ば. Used in written instructions, rules, contracts, and formal speech. Often paired with 〜てください or 〜してください.

Softer than imperative form (しろ/食べろ) but still authoritative. Used by parents to children, teachers to students. More gentle than 命令形 but more direct than てください.
आज्ञार्थक रूप (しろ/食べろ) भन्दा कोमल तर अझै अधिकारपूर्ण। अभिभावकले बच्चालाई, शिक्षकले विद्यार्थीलाई प्रयोग गर्छन्। आज्ञार्थक भन्दा कोमल तर てください भन्दा प्रत्यक्ष।
見える / 聞こえるVerb FormsCan see / can hear — sensory perception (involuntary)देखिन्छ / सुनिन्छ — इन्द्रिय बोध (अनैच्छिक)見える: Noun + が + 見える / 聞こえる: Noun + が + 聞こえる
Different from 見る (to look) and 聞く (to listen). 見える/聞こえる mean something naturally comes into sight/hearing without deliberate effort. Use が particle, not を.
見る (हेर्नु) र 聞く (सुन्नु) भन्दा फरक। 見える/聞こえる को अर्थ कुनै कुरा स्वाभाविक रूपमा देखिन्छ/सुनिन्छ, जानाजानी प्रयास नगरी। を होइन, が कण प्रयोग गर्नुहोस्।
〜予定だDesire & IntentPlan to / scheduled to — fixed plan or schedule~ गर्ने योजना / तालिका — निश्चित योजना वा समयसूचीVerb (plain) + 予定だ / Noun + の + 予定だ
More formal/fixed than つもり. Used for official schedules, travel plans, work plans. 予定です is polite. 予定はない means 'no plan to'.
つもり भन्दा बढी औपचारिक/निश्चित। आधिकारिक समयसूची, यात्रा योजना, काम योजनामा प्रयोग हुन्छ। 予定です विनम्र हो। 予定はない भनेको 'योजना छैन'।
〜と言っているConditionalsSomeone is saying that ~ / says that ~~ भनिरहेको / ~ भन्छ — कसैले भनेकोPerson + は + Sentence (plain) + と言っている
Reports what someone is currently saying or has said. Present tense と言っている implies ongoing or recent statement. Past と言った is a one-time past statement.
कसैले अहिले भनिरहेको वा भनेको रिपोर्ट गर्छ। वर्तमान काल ले जारी वा भर्खरको कथन जनाउँछ। विगत と言った एकपटकको विगत कथन हो।
〜やすい / 〜にくいVerb FormsEasy to do / hard to do — tendency or difficultyसजिलो / गाह्रो — प्रवृत्ति वा कठिनाइVerb ます-stem + やすい / Verb ます-stem + にくい
やすい means easy to do or prone to happen. にくい means hard to do or unlikely to happen. Can also describe physical properties (食べやすい = easy to eat).
やすい भनेको गर्न सजिलो वा हुन सक्ने। にくい भनेको गर्न गाह्रो वा नहुने। भौतिक गुण पनि वर्णन गर्न सक्छ (食べやすい = खान सजिलो)।
〜あとでTime & SequenceAfter ~ / later — temporal sequence~ पछि / पछि — समय क्रमVerb た-form + あとで / Noun + の + あとで
Indicates that something happens after a completed action. Unlike てから, the two actions don't need to be immediately sequential. Can also mean 'later' by itself (あとで = later).
सम्पन्न क्रियापछि केही हुन्छ भन्ने जनाउँछ। てから भन्दा फरक, दुई क्रिया तुरुन्तै पछ्याउनु पर्दैन। आफैंमा 'पछि' भन्ने अर्थ पनि हुन्छ (あとで = पछि)।
How should I study these grammar patterns?
Work through each blueprint in order: read the structure, check the notes, then build your own sentences with it. Patterns are grouped by level, so studying them in sequence follows the exam syllabus.
What changes between grammar levels?
N5 covers basic sentence structure. N4 and N3 add connective forms, conditionals and increasingly formal registers. N2 and N1 expect you to handle academic and business Japanese, including written and spoken styles used in the wild.
