Terms of Use

Last updated: September 2026

Acceptance

By using this website or the NihonGyan app you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.

The service

NihonGyan provides Japanese-learning content: vocabulary, grammar, kanji, flashcards and practice exams aligned with the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT). The service is provided free of charge.

Not affiliated with the JLPT

NihonGyan is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the Japan Foundation, the body that administers the JLPT. “JLPT” is a trademark of its respective owner, used here only to describe which level our study material is aligned with. Our practice questions and mock exams are educational material prepared by us; they are not official past papers and should not be treated as such.

Acceptable use

  • Do not copy, scrape or redistribute the content in bulk.
  • Individual vocabulary, grammar and kanji entries may be quoted for personal study and non-commercial teaching.
  • Do not attempt to interfere with the operation of the service.

Unlocking exam papers

Some practice papers on this website are unlocked by scanning a QR code with the NihonGyan app. This is a convenience feature, not a security control. We make no attempt to prevent copying or redistribution, and we may change or remove the unlocking mechanism at any time.

No warranty

The service is provided “as is” without warranties of any kind. We do not warrant that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that any content is accurate for your purposes. Study material is educational in nature and should not be your only reference for exam preparation.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect or consequential loss arising from your use of the service.

Referral codes

If you received a referral code, it is for your personal use. We may withdraw a code if it is used fraudulently or in a way that misrepresents the service.
