What is JLPT N4?
N4 is the elementary level. The exam expects roughly 1,500 vocabulary words and 300 kanji. NihonGyan has 1000 N4 words, 170 kanji and 60 grammar patterns, with readings, translations and example sentences.
What is different between N4 and N5?
N4 is longer — about 115 minutes against 90 — and the reading passages are longer and faster. It expects roughly twice the vocabulary of N5 and introduces plain past tense, conditionals and the て form.
