〜わりにはComparisonConsidering... / Relative to (contrary to expectation)कै हिसाबले / को तुलनामा (अपेक्षाविपरीत)Verb/Adjective (plain form) + わりには, Noun + のわりには. Compares reality with expectation based on a standard.
Indicates that the result differs from what is expected given the standard. 高いわりに means for being expensive. The result is often opposite to expectation.
मापदण्डका आधारमा अपेक्षाभन्दा फरक नतिजा भएको संकेत गर्छ। 高いわりに को अर्थ महँगो भए पनि हो। नतिजा प्रायः अपेक्षाको उल्टो हुन्छ।
〜によれば / 〜によるとHearsay & AppearanceAccording to...कै अनुसारNoun + によれば / によると. States the source of information, followed by hearsay or quoted information.
Used to cite the source of information: ニュースによると, 天気予報によれば. Often followed by らしい, そうだ, or という. によると and によれば are interchangeable.

〜切る / 〜切れるVerb AspectsTo do fully / To finish completely / To be at the limitपूरै ~ गर्नु / पूर्ण रूपमा सक्नुVerb ます-stem + 切る / 切れる (きる / きれる)
〜切る attached to a verb stem means to do something completely or to the very end (e.g., 走り切る = run the whole way, 食べ切る = eat it all). 〜切れる means can finish completely, and negative 〜切れない means cannot do it all / too much to handle.

Expresses two things changing or occurring together, or one thing happening at the same time as another. Often used for proportional or simultaneous change (e.g., 年を取るとともに = as one gets older). More formal/written than 〜と一緒に.
दुई कुरा सँगै बदलिने वा हुने, वा एक कुरा अर्कोसँगै भएको जनाउँछ। प्रायः समानुपातिक वा समकालीन परिवर्तनका लागि (जस्तै 年を取るとともに = उमेर बढ्दँदै)। 〜と一緒に भन्दा औपचारिक/लिखित शैली।
〜ないことはないNegation & AnyIt's not that... cannot/won'tनगर्ने होइन / गर्न नसक्ने होइनVerb ない-form + ことはない
This double negative expresses reluctant or partial affirmation, meaning 'it's not that I don't/won't'. It softens a statement while admitting the possibility. It can also attach to adjectives.
दोहोरो नकारात्मक भएर 'गर्दिनँ भन्ने होइन, तर...' भन्ने अर्थ दिन्छ। कुरालाई नरम बनाउँदै आधा-आधा स्वीकार गर्ने भाव व्यक्त गर्छ। विशेषणसँग पनि जोडिन सक्छ।
〜くせにConditionalsEven though... / And yet... (with criticism)हुँदा हुँदै पनि / भएर पनिVerb / い-adj plain + くせに / な-adj + な + くせに / Noun + の + くせに
〜くせに means 'even though...', but it carries a critical or contemptuous nuance about the inconsistency. Compared to のに, it adds stronger blame or reproach toward the person.
〜くせにले 'भएर पनि' भन्ने अर्थ दिन्छ तर आलोचनात्मक, खिसीट्याउरो भावसहित। のに भन्दा बढी गुनासो वा निन्दा जनाउँछ।
〜までParticlesEven... (up to and including)...सम्म पनि / ...जतिकोNoun + まで
〜まで means 'even', including an extreme example beyond the expected range. It is similar to さえ, but まで carries the nuance of 'up to and including'. It emphasizes how far or extreme a situation is.
〜まで ले सामान्यभन्दा बाहिरको चरम उदाहरण देखाउँदै 'सम्म पनि' भन्ने अर्थ दिन्छ। さえ सँग मिल्दोजुल्दो तर まで मा 'समावेश गर्दै' भन्ने भाव हुन्छ। अवस्था कति चरम छ भनेर जोड दिन्छ।
〜しかないJudgment & ModalityHave no choice but to......गर्नुको विकल्प छैनVerb dictionary form + しかない
〜しかない means 'have no choice but to do', expressing necessity because no other option exists. 〜ほかない is a similar expression. It shows a resigned decision.
〜しかない ले 'अरू उपाय नभएकाले यही गर्नुपर्छ' भन्ने बाध्यता जनाउँछ। 〜ほかない पनि मिल्दोजुल्दो अभिव्यक्ति हो। अनिच्छुक भएरै निर्णय लिने भाव देखाउँछ।
〜ものだから / 〜んだものReason & ResultBecause... / Just because... (giving an excuse)किनभने / त्यसैले (बहाना बनाउँदा)Verb/Adjective (plain form) + ものだから, or Verb/Adjective (plain form) + んだもの. Both give a personal reason or excuse.
ものだから explains an unavoidable personal reason, mainly in spoken speech. んだもの is a conversational excuse often used by children or in informal talk. Both sound subjective and emotional.
ものだから अनिवार्य व्यक्तिगत कारण बताउन बोलिचालीमा प्रयोग हुन्छ। んだもの अनौपचारिक बहाना हो, प्रायः बालबालिका वा घनिष्ठ कुराकानीमा। दुवै व्यक्तिपरक र भावनात्मक स्वर हुन्छ।
〜ことはないRequest & PermissionThere is no need to...गर्नु पर्दैन / आवश्यक छैनVerb (dictionary form) + ことはない. Indicates that there is no need to do something.
Reassures someone that they need not worry or do something. Softer and more encouraging than する必要がない. Common in 心配することはない (there's no need to worry).
कसैलाई कुनै कुरा गर्नु नपर्ने भनी ढाडस दिन प्रयोग गरिन्छ। する必要がない भन्दा नरम र प्रोत्साहनजनक हुन्छ। 心配することはない (चिन्ता गर्नु पर्दैन) पनि प्रचलित छ।
〜ことRequest & PermissionMust do... / Be sure to... (rule or instruction)गर्नु पर्छ / गर्ने (नियम वा निर्देशन)Verb (dictionary form) + こと. Used alone as a directive to state a rule or instruction.
Used in notices, rules, and written instructions. Sounds formal and impersonal. It typically appears at the end of a sentence in written notices.
सूचना, नियम र लिखित निर्देशनमा प्रयोग हुन्छ। औपचारिक र व्यक्तिगत भावरहित हुन्छ। लिखित सूचनाको अन्त्यमा प्रायः देखिन्छ।
〜ばかりAdverbs & StateNothing but / Onlyमात्रै / केवल[Noun / verb て-form] + ばかり
Indicates that the subject does or has only one thing, often implying that it is excessive or unbalanced. With a noun it means only or nothing but; with て-form + ばかりいる it means someone is always doing that one thing.
विषयले एउटै कुरा मात्र गर्ने वा भएको जनाउँछ, प्रायः अत्यधिक वा असन्तुलित भन्ने आशयसहित। संज्ञासँग मात्रै अर्थ दिन्छ; て-रूप + ばかりいる सँग कुनै काम मात्र सधैं गरिरहनु भन्ने बुझिन्छ।
〜始めるVerb AspectsStart doing...~ गर्न थाल्नुVerb ます-stem + 始める
Auxiliary verb attaching to another verb's ます-stem to indicate the start of an action. Focuses on the moment the action begins. The past form 〜始めた means 'began to do'.
क्रियाको ます-आधारमा जोडिएर कामको सुरुवात जनाउने सहायक क्रिया। काम सुरु भएको क्षणमा केन्द्रित। विगत रूप 〜始めた ले 'गर्न थालेँ' अर्थ दिन्छ।
〜終わるVerb AspectsFinish doing...~ गरेर सक्नुVerb ます-stem + 終わる
Auxiliary verb attaching to another verb's ます-stem to express finishing an action. Similar to 〜あげる but more neutral/everyday; no sense of pride or effort.
क्रियाको ます-आधारमा जोडिएर काम पूरा भएको जनाउने सहायक क्रिया। 〜あげる जस्तै तर बढी तटस्थ/दैनिक; गर्व वा मिहिनेतको भाव हुँदैन।
〜通りにRanges & ConnectionsAccording to... / just as......अनुसार / जस्तैNoun + の + 通りに / Verb (dictionary or た-form) + 通りに
〜通りに means 'in the manner described', following instructions, predictions, or orders. For example, 言った通りに means 'just as (one) said'. It can follow both a noun (with の) and a verb.
〜通りにले 'भनेअनुसार, लेखेअनुसार' गरेर गर्नु भन्ने अर्थ दिन्छ। निर्देशन, पूर्वानुमान वा आदेशलाई पछ्याउँदा प्रयोग हुन्छ। नामसँग の लिएर र क्रियासँग जोडिएर प्रयोग हुन्छ।

Emphasizes that just one condition is sufficient. さえ highlights the minimum requirement.

〜にかわってExpressionInstead of / on behalf ofको सट्टामा / को तर्फबाटNoun + にかわって
Expresses that someone or something takes the place of another. Can be used for substitutions or acting on someone's behalf.
कुनै व्यक्ति वा वस्तुले अर्कोको स्थान लिन्छ भन्ने व्यक्त गर्छ। प्रतिस्थापन वा कसैको तर्फबाट काम गर्दा प्रयोग गर्न सकिन्छ।
〜に基づいてExpressionBased on / in accordance withमा आधारित / अनुसारNoun + に基づいて / に基づく + Noun
Expresses that an action or decision is founded on a particular basis, rule, fact, or experience.
कुनै क्रिया वा निर्णय कुनै विशेष आधार, नियम, तथ्य, वा अनुभवमा आधारित हुन्छ भन्ने व्यक्त गर्छ।
〜ずにはいられないJudgment & ModalityCannot help but... / Cannot stop oneself from...नरोकिई बस्न नसक्नु / गरिनै रहनुVerb (ない-form without ない) + ずにはいられない. Expresses an uncontrollable urge or inability to suppress a feeling.
Describes an involuntary reaction that cannot be suppressed. 泣かずにはいられない means cannot help crying. 〜ないではいられない is a similar, slightly less formal variant.
दबाउन नसकिने अनैच्छिक प्रतिक्रिया वर्णन गर्छ। 泣かずにはいられない को अर्थ रोइनै रहनु हो। 〜ないではいられない पनि मिल्दोजुल्दो, अलि बढी बोलचालको रूप हो।
〜にしてはComparisonConsidering that... / For a... (unexpectedly)कै लागि / कै हिसाबले (अपेक्षाभन्दा फरक)Verb/Adjective (plain form) + にしては, Noun + にしては. Shows that a result is unexpected given the standard.
Very similar to わりには, but にしては focuses on a specific category or standard. 8月にしては means for August. Used when the result contradicts expectations.
わりには सँग मिल्दोजुल्दो तर にしては विशेष श्रेणी वा मापदण्डमा केन्द्रित हुन्छ। 8月にしては को अर्थ अगस्टका हिसाबले हो। अपेक्षाविपरीत परिणाम हुँदा प्रयोग गरिन्छ।
〜に比べてComparisonCompared to...सँग तुलना गर्दाNoun + に比べて (と比べて is also possible). States a comparison between two things.
Expresses comparison; the following clause describes the difference. に比べて is slightly formal, と比べて is conversational. Often used with 〜ほうが or はるかに.
तुलना व्यक्त गर्छ; पछिको वाक्यांशले भिन्नता वर्णन गर्छ। に比べて अलि औपचारिक, と比べて बोलचालको हुन्छ। प्रायः 〜ほうが वा はるかに सँग प्रयोग हुन्छ।
〜てはじめてTime & SequenceNot until... / Only after doing...~ गरेपछि मात्रVerb て-form + はじめて
Expresses that only after experiencing or doing something does a realization or change occur. What comes before てはじめて is the trigger; the result follows. It implies the speaker did not feel or understand it before.
कुनै काम गरेर वा अनुभव गरेपछि मात्र एउटा बोध वा परिवर्तन हुने कुरा जनाउँछ। てはじめて अघिको कुरा ट्रिगर हो र पछिको कुरा त्यसको नतिजा। त्यसअघि सो कुरा थाहा नभएको वा महसुस नभएको भाव दिन्छ।
〜こそExpressionEmphatic 'this very one / exactly'यही नै / त्यही नैNoun / particle + こそ
〜こそ emphasizes the preceding word strongly, meaning 'this very one' or 'precisely'. It can replace は or が to add emphasis. It also appears in fixed phrases like こちらこそ (likewise).
〜こそले अघिल्लो शब्दमा बलियो जोड दिन्छ, 'यही नै' भन्ने अर्थ। は वा が को सट्टा प्रयोग गरेर जोड दिन सकिन्छ। こちらこそ जस्ता निश्चित अभिव्यक्तिमा पनि देखिन्छ।
〜といってもConditionalsAlthough I said... / Even though one might say...~ भने पनि / ~ भनिए पनि (मात्र)Sentence (plain form) + といっても
Concedes a statement but adds a limit/qualification. Often followed by a clause indicating it's not to a great extent. Pattern: XといってもY (although X, Y limits it). Sets a realistic boundary on a claim.
कुनै कथन स्वीकार गर्छ तर सीमा/qualifier थप्छ। प्रायः पछिको खण्डले धेरै हदसम्म नभएको जनाउँछ। संरचना: XといってもY। (X भए पनि, Y ले सीमित गर्छ)। दाबिलाई यथार्थपरक सीमा दिन्छ।
〜つもりだったDesire & IntentIntended to... / Was planning to...~ गर्ने मन थियो / ~ गर्ने योजना थियोVerb (plain/dictionary / ない-form) + つもりだった
Past form of つもり (intention), showing that the speaker had intended to do (or not do) something, often where the plan was not carried out or something else happened instead.
つもり (इरादा) को भूतकाल, वक्ताले केही गर्ने (वा नगर्ने) इरादा राखेको तर त्यो योजना पूरा नभएको वा अर्कै भएको जनाउँछ।
〜ということだConditionalsIn other words... / That means... / I heard that...~ भन्ने अर्थ हो / ~ भन्ने सुनिन्छSentence (plain form) + ということだ
Has two main uses: (1) explaining or summarizing a conclusion (in other words / that means), and (2) reporting secondhand information (I heard that...). Interpretation depends on context.
दुई मुख्य प्रयोग: (१) निष्कर्ष वा व्याख्या (अर्थात् / त्यसको मतलब), र (२) अरूबाट सुनेको कुरा रिपोर्ट गर्नु (~ भन्ने सुनिन्छ)। अर्थ सन्दर्भमा भर पर्छ।
〜というと / 〜といえばConditionalsSpeaking of... / When it comes to...~ भन्दै गर्दा / ~ भन्ने बित्तिकैNoun/Phrase + というと / といえば
Used to introduce a topic and recall or state what immediately comes to mind about it. といえば is also commonly used to change topics (speaking of which). というと focuses more on the specific association.
विषय परिचय गराउँदै त्यसको बारेमा तुरुन्तै सम्झना आउने कुरा बताउन प्रयोग गरिन्छ। といえば विषय बदल्न पनि प्रायः प्रयोग हुन्छ (कुरा गर्दै गर्दा)। というと बढी विशेष सम्बन्धमा केन्द्रित हुन्छ।
〜ところだったTime & SequenceWas almost / On the verge of...लगभग गरिहाल्ने अवस्था थियो / ~ गर्न लागेको थियोVerb dictionary form / て-form + ところだった
Expresses that something almost happened but didn't. Usually paired with 危なく / もう少しで (almost / nearly). Carries the nuance of narrowly avoiding an undesirable outcome.
लगभग हुने तर नभएको कुरा जनाउँछ। प्रायः 危なく / もう少しで (लगभग) सँग जोडिन्छ। नराम्रो नतिजाबाट जोगिएको भाव दिन्छ।
〜ばよかったJudgment & ModalityShould have... / I wish I had...गरेको भए हुन्थ्यो भन्ने पछुतोVerb ば-form + よかった
〜ばよかった expresses regret that you didn't do something, meaning 'I should have...'. The negative 〜なければよかった means 'I shouldn't have...'. It is always used with a sense of hindsight.
〜ばよかったले 'गरेको भए राम्रो हुन्थ्यो' भन्ने पछुतो वा इच्छा व्यक्त गर्छ। なければよかった बनाए 'नगरेको भए हुन्थ्यो' भन्न सकिन्छ। सधैं विगततिर फर्केर हेर्दा प्रयोग हुन्छ।
〜続けるVerb AspectsContinue doing...गरिरहनु / निरन्तर गर्नुVerb ます-stem + 続ける
〜続ける expresses that an action continues without stopping. For example, 話し続ける means 'to keep talking' and 働き続ける means 'to keep working'. The past form 続けた refers to a period of continuation that has ended.
〜続けるले कुनै क्रिया रोकिने बिना निरन्तर चलिरहनु जनाउँछ। उदाहरणका लागि, 話し続ける = कुरा गरिरहनु र 働き続ける = काम गरिरहनु। विगत रूप 続けた ले निरन्तरता सकिएको अवधि जनाउँछ।
〜をはじめExpressionIncluding / starting with — representative exampleबाट सुरु गर्दै / सहित — प्रतिनिधि उदाहरणNoun + をはじめ (として)
Used to list a representative example followed by other similar items. Often used to introduce a category or group.
प्रतिनिधि उदाहरण दिएर त्यसपछि अन्य समान कुराहरू सूचीबद्ध गर्न प्रयोग हुन्छ। प्रायः कुनै वर्ग वा समूहको परिचय दिन प्रयोग गरिन्छ।
〜っぱなしVerb AspectsLeft in a state / Left unattendedछोडिएको अवस्थामा / यस्तै रहेकोVerb (ます-stem) + っぱなし. Describes leaving something in its current state without attention, or doing something continuously.
Two uses: (1) leaving something unattended (窓を開けっぱなし), (2) doing something continuously without stopping (立ちっぱなし, 働きっぱなし).
दुई प्रयोग हुन्छन्: (1) कुरा यथावत् छोड्नु (窓を開けっぱなし), (2) नरोकिई निरन्तर गरिरहनु (立ちっぱなし, 働きっぱなし)।
〜気味Adverbs & StateSlight tendency of... / Feel a bit...केही खालको / थोरै लाग्नेVerb (ます-stem) + 気味, or Noun + 気味. Indicates a slight degree of a (usually negative) state or tendency.
Used when a condition is slightly present but not fully developed. 風邪気味 means feeling a slight cold. The nuance is usually negative.
अवस्था पूर्ण नभई केही मात्रामा मात्र भएको संकेत गर्छ। 風邪気味 को अर्थ हल्का रुघा लागेको हुन्छ। प्रायः नकारात्मक भाव रहन्छ।
〜ふりをするVerb AspectsPretend to... / Act as if...हुन नाटक गर्नु / भएको झैं गर्नुVerb (dictionary or ない-form) + ふりをする, Noun + のふりをする, Adjective + ふりをする. Pretends to be in a certain state.
Describes pretending or acting as if something were true. Can be negative (知らないふり) or positive (元気なふり). Also appears as 〜ふりをして as an adverbial form.
कुनै कुरा साँचो भएको झैं नाटक गर्ने वर्णन गर्छ। नकारात्मक (知らないふり) वा सकारात्मक (元気なふり) दुवै हुन सक्छ। 〜ふりをして का रूपमा पनि प्रयोग हुन्छ।
まるで〜ようだHearsay & AppearanceJust like / As if...ठ्याक्कै ~ जस्तो / ~ जस्तो देखिनेまるで + [noun + の / verb plain form] + ようだ
Used to compare something to something else, usually paired with まるで (just as if). It often expresses a subjective impression or a hypothetical comparison, saying that something looks or feels exactly like something else.
कुनै कुरालाई अर्को कुरासँग तुलना गर्न प्रयोग गरिन्छ, प्रायः まるで (एकदमै जस्तो) सँग। कुनै कुरा ठ्याक्कै अर्को कुराजस्तो देखिने व्यक्तिपरक धारणा वा काल्पनिक तुलना जनाउँछ।
〜がるVerb FormsShows signs of feeling... / Acts like he/she feels...~ महसुस गरेको संकेत देखाउनु[Adjective stem / たい-form / noun] + がる (がっている)
Converts a feeling or desire expressed by an i-adjective, na-adjective, or たい into observable behavior, used for other people (third person). がっている is common to describe someone currently showing signs of that feeling.
भावना वा इच्छा (i-विशेषण, na-विशेषण, たい) लाई अरू व्यक्तिको व्यवहारमा देखिने बाह्य संकेतमा बदल्छ, तेस्रो व्यक्तिका लागि प्रयोग गरिन्छ। कसैले हाल महसुस गरिरहेको बताउन がっている प्रायः प्रयोग हुन्छ।

Emphasizes that something is true for the first item and even more so for the second, which is the more obvious or natural one. The nuance is: not only A, but naturally also B.
पहिलो कुरामा त कुरै छैन, दोस्रो कुरामा पनि उत्तिकै सत्य छ भनी जोड दिन्छ, जुन बढी स्पष्ट वा स्वाभाविक हो। अर्थ: A मात्र होइन, स्वाभाविक रूपमा B पनि।
たとえ〜てもConditionalsEven if... / No matter what...जतिसुकै भए पनि / भए पनिたとえ + [Verb て-form / Adjective て-form] + も
Emphasizes that the result is unchanged no matter what happens. たとえ pairs with 〜ても (even if). The following statement expresses firm determination or a conclusion unaffected by the condition.
जे भए पनि नतिजा परिवर्तन नहुने कुरामा जोड दिन्छ। たとえ लाई ても (भए पनि) सँग जोडिन्छ। पछिको वाक्यले अटल निश्चय वा शर्तले असर नपर्ने निष्कर्ष जनाउँछ।
どんなに〜ても / いくら〜てもConditionalsNo matter how much... / However...जति नै ~ पनि / कति नै गरे पनिどんなに / いくら + Verb て-form + も
Both mean no matter how much or however. どんなに works with adjectives and verbs meaning however hard; いくら usually pairs with verbs meaning however much one tries. The result after ても is unaffected or negative.
दुवैको अर्थ जति नै गरे पनि वा कति नै भए पनि हो। どんなに विशेषण र क्रियासँग कति नै कठिन भए पनि; いくら सामान्यतः क्रियासँग जति नै प्रयास गरे पनि अर्थमा प्रयोग हुन्छ। ても पछिको नतिजा परिवर्तन हुँदैन वा नकारात्मक हुन्छ।
〜向けRanges & ConnectionsAimed at / Intended for...~ का लागि बनाइएको / ~ उद्देश्यका लागिNoun + 向け (むけ)
Indicates the target audience or purpose of a product, event, or content. Attaches directly to nouns (e.g., 外国人向け, 女性向け). Similar to 向き but 向け focuses on the intended audience rather than suitability.
कुनै उत्पादन, कार्यक्रम वा सामग्रीको लक्षित दर्शक वा उद्देश्य जनाउँछ। संज्ञामा सोझै जोडिन्छ (जस्तै 外国人向け, 女性向け)। 向き सँग मिल्दोजुल्दो तर 向け ले लक्षित दर्शकमा जोड दिन्छ, योग्यतामा होइन।
How should I study these grammar patterns?
Work through each blueprint in order: read the structure, check the notes, then build your own sentences with it. Patterns are grouped by level, so studying them in sequence follows the exam syllabus.
What changes between grammar levels?
N5 covers basic sentence structure. N4 and N3 add connective forms, conditionals and increasingly formal registers. N2 and N1 expect you to handle academic and business Japanese, including written and spoken styles used in the wild.
Do the patterns include example sentences?
